When purchasing a new home, the final step is making the move; however, transitioning presents its own set of unique challenges.  Sufficient planning is key, but often overshadowed by the many demands encumbered in buying.  Arguably, the thought of moving is both exciting and overwhelming, but simple considerations can make the process easier.

Create a Strategy for Your Move by Using a Budget and Checklist

Transitioning homeowners are encouraged to set and adhere to a realistic budget which is complementary to their moving plans.  The costs encumbered in moving aren’t limited to renting a truck and hiring movers, as packing materials, fuel, lodging, meals and unexpected contingencies must also be considered.  Moving without a plan or failing to adhere to a budget, often leads to delays and significant costs.

There’s a strategy to well-organized moves; to ensure organization is maintained, packing one room at a time is advised.  When readying items to be packed, homeowners should inventory their property.  Boxes should be systematically labeled, numbered and color-keyed for ease of readability, with contents clearly identified.  Ideally, similar items will be packed together to deter breakage.  Heavier items should be packed in smaller sturdier boxes, while lighter items may be placed in larger boxes.  Fragile items should be identified accordingly.

Preparing a tracking checklist inventorying each box, will ensure all items are accounted for upon arrival at the new home.  Whether utilizing the services of a moving company or electing to self-move, labeling greatly assists the orderly processing of all transported items.

Maximize the Efficiency of Disassembly and Packing

There are other considerations that also help facilitate an efficient move.  When disassembling furniture, such as bed frames, shelving and tables, a furnishings screws, and fasteners, should be securely tapped to the underside of the item being transported.  This helps prevent loss, but also ensures these parts are available when reassembling.  To avoid injuries, boxes should be kept to a maximum of fifty pounds, ideally not exceeding thirty pounds.

When stacking, heavier boxes should be placed on the bottom with lighter ones on the top.  While, space saving measures should encompass the usage of towels, blankets, pillows and clothing, as a means of padding fragile items.

Treat Your Move Like a Vacation

As if preparing for a vacation, packing daily-living essentials for each member of the family is a definite must.  Using suitcases proves beneficial, as medications, toiletries, eyeglasses and clothing may all be easily accessed.  Further, cleaning supplies should also be kept readily available.  If not properly separated, searching for these items through a myriad of boxes, after a move has concluded, can prove difficult. 

Don't Forget About Your Moving Math

When calculating moving costs, distance plays an influential role.  A cross-town move is easier and less expensive than a cross-country relocation.  Those preparing to move must carefully weigh the facts, determining what they’re willing to accept and outsourcing where necessary.  The option to move oneself, acquiring the services of a moving company, or seeking a hybrid of both solutions, requires careful deliberation.  The ease afforded through all-inclusive moving services, include packing, loading, transportation and unloading, but also come at a cost.  Conversely, do-it-yourself moves are financially expedient, but require a significant amount of work.

The costs encumbered in contracting with an all-inclusive professional moving service, hiring moving laborers or securing a truck rental are largely influenced by supply and demand.  Timing is often key; to assist in the management of expenses, homeowners are encouraged to shop competitors and schedule services well in advance to ensure best pricing and availability.

When hiring outside services, cautiousness is key.  Ensuring the legitimacy of the company chosen is crucial, as is confirming appropriate licensure and corresponding insurance coverages.  An examination of the prospective company’s reputation through online reviews is advised.  And, when outside services are utilized, a written quote detailing all expenses is vitally important.

An adjustment period is natural when moving into a new home.  However, a well-planned approach, makes the transition easier for all family members, while also affording an opportunity to enjoy the benefits to come.
